The Ukrainian Catholic Church of Our Lady of Protection in Brisbane, built in 1961,applies a contemporary approach to the historical Ukrainian Baroque style. The main features of the plan are the three cupolas at the front, over the narthex and choir gallery;a single-naved body with a pitched roof;and a sanctuary topped by a shallow dome. The building adapts the more usual central-domed,five-cupola plan to the requirements of a narrow street frontage. The character of the building as a whole is largely determined by its interior, whose dominant feature is the iconostasis. This is a screen in natural wood with carved elements, and with icons arranged in a canonical order. Of special interest is the altar in carved oak, dominated by a large mural depicting the Virgin Mary in the posture of the Protectress, traditional for many Ukrainian churches. The icons and the mural were painted in a modern adaptation of the Byzantine style by the Ukrainian-born Canadian painter Myron Levytsky. The building was designed by Ukrainian-bornBrisbanearchitect Roman Pavlyshyn. Activities in Brisbane 2011
